I am a mature worker looking to break into the IT world by transferring my writing skills into the technical communications area; technical writing, content development, documentation, quality assurance, etc.
My sense is that I will need to return to school for a diploma in computer science to augment my M.A. in Professional Writing (1989). On the other hand, this year is the first time I've seriously tried to break away from my bucolic existence in the Comox Valley to chase after technical communications positions. Do trained writers get hired in IT even if they don't have a formal IT education?
My formal training included courses and a practicum in technical writing. I've got lots of administrative background, which has resulted in an interest in records and information management, as well. Much of my writing has been in the public relations area, plus some business planning and grant writing.
I would appreciate any advice anyone can give me. How could someone like me break into the IT industry?
I have done about a dozen informational interviews at various companies in Victoria. I've been writing up my notes and will be sending out Thank You notes to everybody who was so generous with their time and information. I look forward to more contacts as I go along this road to making myself useful.
