MAC vs. Linux vs. Windows

As a computer consultant, I need to be proficient on whatever platform my customers own. The majority of PC users have Windows, some have MAC and some Linux. In the server world, it's split up between Windows, Sun Solaris, Redhat Linux and sometimes MAC.

So my question is, what will be the OS of choice in the future? I have used Windows 2000 server extensively. Microsoft products are definitely easy to use but they are very expensive and prone to virus, worms, trojan horses, hackers, etc. etc.

I have used UNIX/Linux extensively and am a real proponent. I would install Linux on more systems however most customers are unfamiliar and don't have the comfort level - yet.

MAC seems to be coming on strong because it is really easy to use, has a nice interface called Aqua and MACOS X which is built on UNIX is rock solid. Customers are somewhat more willing to try MAC because it is a familiar name.

The other consideration is the application. MySQL database software which is a fraction of the cost of Microsoft's SQL is gaining widely in popularity. OpenOffice is a fraction of the cost of Microsoft office and can create MS compatible file formats.

So can Microsoft hang on to their market share with alternatives like MAC and Linux that do the same thing and are not prone to the virus mess?

Jason.
